COP22 Soon in Marrakech
The twenty-second session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will be held in Marrakech from 7 to 18 November 2016.
The Marrakesh Climate Change Conference represents a straight continuation of the world summits following the adoption of the Kyoto protocol in 1997 covering the 2008-2012 period.
Let us remind ourselves that during the Paris climate conference (COP21) in December 2015, the 195 participating countries adopted, at the finish line, a binding treaty which aims at limiting the global warming to well below 2°C.
Since then, if our accounting is accurate, 100 countries representing 60 % of the world emissions of greenhouse gases, ratified the treaty.
For the Moroccan delegate-minister for the Environment, this conference will be "an edition of innovation in adaptation to and mitigation of climate change effects.”
The loss and damage financing will be at the core of discussions during this COP 22. It is " the sinews of war " which is going to focus on 100 billion dollars a year – 91 billion euros – promised, by 2020, by the countries of the North to those of the South confronted with the effects of global warming. An old promise which dates from the conference of Copenhagen, 2009.
