KCE appointed to start publicly funded clinical study programmes

The Minister of Public Health Maggie De Block has set aside a budget of 5 million euro in order to enable the Belgian Health Care Knowledge Center (KCE) to start and follow-up independent publicly funded clinical trials.

These trials, financed by public funding, will for instance evaluate the added value of medicines and medical devices in comparison to existing treatments. As such, the most adequate treatment can be determined. The first study proposals will be selected in the Summer of 2016.

Such public study programmes have already demonstrate positive results in the United Kingdom and Netherlands, where they contribute to the orientation of public health policies to more effective treatments for the patient and a more efficient use of public resources dedicated to health care. They are thus an additional tool for the Government to organize policy on public health or social security.
